Bill Battle (born 1941) is the University of Alabama’s Athletic Director. Dr. Judy Bonner， the university president， appointed him， and the board of trustees approved him on March 22， 2013. He took over from long-serving Director Mal Moore， who stepped down at the age of 73 due to health issues. Bill formerly worked as a licence executive and played and coached college football. From 1970 to 1976， he was the head football coach at the University of Tennessee. He was the youngest collegiate head coach in the country at the time he took over as head coach， at the age of 29. Battle， a native Birmingham， Alabama， and a graduate of the University of Alabama， was one of several former players and assistant coaches under Bear Bryant who went on to become head coaches. Battle was forced out after the 1976 season， despite a 59–22–2 record in seven seasons in Knoxville in an era when Alabama dominated the Southeastern Conference and annually competed for the national championship. This allowed Volunteer legend Johnny Majors to return to his alma mater after leading Pittsburgh to the 1976 national championship. The Collegiate Licensing Company was founded by Battle， who also serves as its chairman (CLC). Battle signed Paul “Bear” Bryant to a licencing agreement in 1981 while working for Golden Eagle Enterprises in Selma， Alabama. CLC’s first university client was the University of Alabama. Battle relocated the newly created company to Atlanta， Georgia in 1983. Battle is also a member of the Harris Interactive College Football Poll voting group.
