In 1997, Regan released Brian Regan Live, his first CD. Regan released a DVD of his performance at the Irvine Improv in 2004 titled I Walked on the Moon and was also a featured comedian in the animated Shorties Watchin ‘ Shorties series of a Comedy Central. On June 10, 2007, Brian debuted the first one-hour special Standing Up at Comedy Central. The special was recorded in April at Irvine, CA’s The Barclay Theater and a performance DVD was released on August 14. 2007.

Brian Regan’s Stand Up and Away! Is Good-Natured But Ultimately Unfocused
After almost 40 years as a comedian, Brian Regan is still inarguably one of the most jovial, likable stage presences out there. His reputation as a “clean comic” has damaged his credibility amongst coastal audiences these days, but he remains a heartland favorite, and it’s easy to see why when watching Stand Up and Away!, his hybrid stand-up/sketch series for Netflix.
The format of the show essentially adapts the Chapelle Show and Key & Peele format to be more stand-up specific. Regan performs bits before throwing to video that either continues the premise of the bit or goes in its own direction. To do this, he enlists the help of his “floor producer” Beth Triffon, a winning presence who is given an impossible job in the context of the show.
Triffon essentially acts as the sidekick here, but the problem is that in a show that needs to go from stand-up to interjection to sketch, the interjections from Triffon are doomed to feel inorganic, despite her best efforts.
Stand-up of the Regan variety often hinges on the suspension of disbelief that these are off-the-cuff observations, and this is undercut by the format of the show, which reveals the seams of the narrative in spite of itself.
That said, Regan’s gentle presence doesn’t necessarily impede the material. In the first episode, he turns his iconic Dad-ish energy towards the cockiness of Neil Armstrong at cocktail parties “interjecting in another conversation with “that reminded me, once I was driving in the Sea of Tranquility…”, or a hearing aid that markets itself by noting you’ll be able to hear other people whispering (“they didn’t invent whispering for compliments”).
This energy floats the show most of the time, but can’t dig it out of a format that just lacks enough focus to really get going.

With Netflix Show, Veteran Comic Brian Regan Gets His Big Break—at 60
In nearly 40 years performing stand-up comedy, Mr. Regan notched multiple achievements but never household-name fame. Now he has a new show with Jerry Seinfeld as executive producer.
In a craft that is said to be all about timing, it has taken comedian Brian Regan nearly 40 years of performing to feel like he’s arrived. The 60-year-old has been doing stand-up since the early 1980s, when he used to steal 5 minutes on stage while bussing tables at a comedy club in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
He’s built an impressive career with his self-deprecating humor and can point to many achievements, including years of sold-out shows and 28 appearances on CBS’s “Late Show with David Letterman.” But he’s never been a household name or attained Hollywood fame.
Now that’s starting to change. He landed a show on Netflix, “Stand Up and Away!” with Jerry Seinfeld as executive producer. With four episodes released on Christmas Day, it mixes stand-up with sketches and audience Q&A. It follows an hourlong special he taped for Netflix in 2017, and he has another special in the works for the platform later this year.
“I’ve been at this a long time, and in the last two years, three years, things have just started happening that I didn’t think we’re ever going to happen,” says Mr. Regan, reflecting as he pours a second cup of coffee in his hotel room high above Manhattan’s 6th Avenue. “Now that I’m getting these opportunities, it’s thrilling for me.”
In his comedy, he likes to come off as a guy you’d know at work or in your neighborhood, he says. He riffs about everyday things like childhood memories or air travel.
In one signature joke, he observes that when airlines lose your baggage, they give you a handy essentials kit to quell your frustration: “Oh, these are the essentials? Then I overpacked. I thought I needed all that stuff I meticulously put in my suitcase. I stand corrected.”
Mr. Regan was raised in Miami, the fourth of eight brothers and sisters in a big Irish family. His dad, Walter, coached Little League and worked as an accountant with Eastern Airlines. He was a great laugher, Mr. Regan says, recalling how satisfying it felt when at age 12 he was able to elicit a big, hearty roar from his dad. As his own kids, now 19 and 15, we’re growing up, he liked to reward them with his own big laugh.
Mr. Regan’s comedy career started inauspiciously when he dropped out of Ohio’s Heidelberg College to become a busboy at the Comic Strip in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in the early 1980s. After shows, he’d take to the stage as people were filing out. Eventually, he started working on the road full-time, just as a new stand-up boom launched.
He won fans, landing a half-hour Showtime special, “Something’s Wrong With the Regan Boy,” in 1992, and started popping up on the late-night circuit.
After performing a set on Letterman one night 25 years ago, he returned to his hotel room to a phone call from his friend and fan Mr. Seinfeld, calling with compliments, congratulations—and the prospect of greater stardom.
“He said, ‘If you want me to make any phone call for you I will do that,’” Mr. Regan remembers. “But I thought it was cheating,” he admits now.“I thought I’m supposed to earn this…. So I said no. I was very thankful and said I appreciate it, but let me just see what happens.”
Instead, he stayed on the road, churning out comedy albums and the occasional cable special. In his first album, “Brian Regan: Live” from 1997, he displayed his trademark self-deprecation.
He joked that he was “just trying to go through life without looking stupid. It’s not working out too well.” He talked about being the schoolyard kid who filled a cup with dirt the morning of the school science fair to pass off as his project.
In 2005 he embarked on the aptly named Never-Ending Tour, now with nearly 15 years of sold-out theater shows hitting more than 80 cities annually. Mr. Regan has attracted some big-name admirers. “He’s one of the few comedians I’ve seen crush. Just crush!” says Jimmy Fallon.
Now the host of NBC’s “Tonight Show,” Mr. Fallon occasionally opened for Mr. Regan in the mid-90s and admits to still “slipping into Brian Reganisms,” accidental impressions that he picked up in his years as a fan, during his nightly monologue.
But after decades of Mr. Regan carving own path, there was still no word from Hollywood. “They had zero interest in me. Zero,” he says. Then another call came. Again from Mr. Seinfeld, with more compliments after a 2015 Comedy Central special and another suggestion that he deserved his own show.
This time, Mr. Regan took him up. (A representative for Mr. Seinfeld confirmed Mr. Regan’s account but said that Mr. Seinfeld wasn’t available for comment.)
The two met for coffee in Las Vegas, where Mr. Regan lives. “I pitched the show like a tight spiral in about three to four minutes, and he said ‘I like it. Let’s do it,’” Mr. Regan said. The discussions resulted in Netflix’s “Stand Up and Away!”
Mr. Regan and a writing staff craft short sketches, often pulling from his decades of material. An old bit about how difficult it would be to get an iron approved as a new household product in today’s safety-conscious world—“I want one side to be a white-hot heat for scarring.
I want the sheer weight to be able to cause blunt force trauma… and I want a wire coming down so you can get the toddlers involved”—gets adapted into a sketch about the guys who first pitched chain saws and garbage disposals.
After decades in the business, the success is sweet, Mr. Regan says. “I’ve had a lot of rejections along the years,” he says. “So it’s nice to go, ‘I can do this.’”

Nunchucks and Flamethrowers Is an Accessible Brian Regan Outing with Uncomfortable Undertones
About halfway through Nunchucks and Flamethrowers—Brian Regan’s new Netflix special, aptly named to reflect the enthusiasm and Spielbergian sense of wonder he brings to it—he makes a point of comparison between himself and his father, specifically about their relationship with jokes. “I like everybody in the lasso.”
Which is exactly the thing about Brian Regan. His giddy, clean, observational style ensures this, and it’s what has given him a great deal of crossover appeal over the last 20 years.
On full display here, it’s actually incredibly refreshing to see a nearly 60-year-old male comedian who isn’t doggedly insisting that comedy has to come at someone else’s expense. There is no anti-PC, telling-it-like-it-is, a-table-in-a-comedy-club-only-cares-if-you’re-funny bullshit here.
Regan’s populism can still back him into a corner in regards to his audience, however. “I don’t think I’ve ever been more afraid to bring up a subject in my life,” he says after mentioning the president (and receiving a mix of nervous laughter and a few “whoo”s in return).
Okay, Brian—you brought it up! It’s a laissez-faire attitude that seems to keep getting us into trouble, so it’s disappointing to see it pop up again here.
Otherwise, Nunchucks and Flamethrowers sticks to Regan’s strengths. He’s both a master craftsman and a comic who still carries himself with an endearing bit of believable anxiety at being up there in front of all those people.
The silliness is occasionally a little old-fashioned and occasionally inspired. “People tell me TV adds 10 pounds,” Regan says. “I didn’t believe it until I was watching this nature show about ants and I was like WOW!”
I don’t think Regan lets his boy scout reputation reduce him (this special ends with a bit about him peeing all over his brothers).
And I believe that his conciliatory tone when bringing up serious realities comes from a genuine desire for everyone to just drop it and get along. But, as we’re slowly coming around to realizing, it’s not that simple anymore, and it never really was.
